The St. Nectarios Vacation Church School was held on June 14 - 17. "Mary, the Ark of Salvation" was the theme and the students delved in depth with events and facts about the Virgin Mary and the four feast days the Orthodox Church celebrates commemorating her life. Under the direction of Father Peter Balkas; with Dimitri Tobias, lay assistant; and Elaine Regopoulos, Sunday School Coordinator the students became well acquainted with the life of the Theotokos. In addition, they explored the sacraments of Baptism and Chrismation and their importance.
It was a most gratifying week as the children learned about all of what we do in the church as Orthodox Christians offers us opportunities to grow closer to God and be ever mindful of the Salvation of our souls for eternity. One of the high points of the week occurred when we went to visit the Metropolis. There the children were greeted warmly by His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos and His Grace Bishop Demetrios of Mokissos. It was beautiful seeing the children listen to his Eminence's words of encouragement and to be with him in a relaxed environment. Our hope and prayer is that this most worthwhile program grows in the number of attendees in the years to come.
