July 20, 2018 Feast of the Prophet Elias and St. Maria Skobstova, New Martyr of France

Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me,
    for in you my soul takes refuge;
in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge,
    until the destroying storms pass by. [Psalm 56(57):1]

Beloved in the Lord,

It is with a heavy heart and deep concern that we learned of the tornadoes that devastated central Iowa yesterday, a region within the direct spiritual care of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago. As our brothers and sisters begin to recover physically, emotionally, and spiritually from this natural disaster, we are invited to offer prayers for their healing and continued strength. We also encourage the people living near the affected areas to collaborate with the International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) “Frontliners” and with local emergency services personnel to provide humanitarian aid and comfort.

For the next several weeks, we request that all parishes of this Holy Metropolis include the following petition during the Great Litany of all divine services, and to remember the people of Iowa during the upcoming Fast for the Dormition of the Theotokos:

Petition for the Great Litany:

Again, we pray for the victims of the tornadoes in Iowa, and for all those suffering in the wake of natural disasters, that they may receive help and strength from above, that their wellbeing may be restored, and for their salvation.

It is my fervent prayer that the Holy Trinity, “our refuge and strength,” will guide and bless us during this time of suffering and rebuilding.
