To this end\, our annual Trial series takes famous legal cases from Greek history and tries them before an audience to demonstrate the enduring relevance of these ancient disputes. This year\, we are excited to present The Trial of Pericles on Wednesday\, April 17 at 7:00 PM at the Harris Theater in Chicago. Please click here for a preview of the event. \nThe Trial of Pericles will pose this question: Was Pericles a hero or a tyrant? Although he is known as a great Athenian statesman and a guardian of Athenian democracy\, Pericles garnered enemies when he altered the Athenian Constitution to revoke the citizenship of those without two Athenian parents\, claiming this was necessary to protect Athens from foreign interference. Pericles’ actions erased citizenship rights for numerous Athenians\, including the right to vote.

DESCRIPTION:The Junior Olympics of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago dates back to 1981 and has grown into the largest single gathering youth in the Metropolis\, filled with family-friendly activities. From its inception\, the Junior Olympics has been hosted by SS. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church\, Palos Hills\, Illinois. The community not only organizes the event\, but also shares its facilities with the entire Metropolis to make the Junior Olympics possible. \nEach year\, thousands of parents\, young adults\, and children look forward to kicking off the Summer at this Memorial Day Weekend event in order to coach\, view\, and participate in the festivities. Olympic activities are offered for all age levels\, with competition in basketball\, swimming\, track and field\, softball\, volleyball\, soccer\, chess\, checkers\, backgammon (tavli)\, ping-pong\, & much more. The Junior Olympics aims to live its mission\, which is rooted in St. Paul’s Second Letter to Timothy: “…If anyone competes as an athlete\, they do not win the prize unless they compete according to the rules. Remember\, therefore Jesus Christ Risen from the dead...” \nThe 2024 Junior Olympics will be held May 24-26\, 2024 at SS. SUMMARY:St. Demetrios Church in Libertyville Greek Fest
DESCRIPTION:The annual Lake County Greek Fest takes place on Friday\, July 12\, Saturday\, July 13\, and Sunday\, July 14 on the grounds of Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Libertyville.  Greek Fest will be open each day from 11 AM until 9 PM. \nThe event will be held on the church grounds on O’Plaine Road\, south of Route 120 (Belvidere Road) and north of Route 137 (Buckley Road).  The beautiful golden dome of the sixteen-year-old church can be seen from the I-94 Tollway.  Visitors will be able to tour the beautiful Fifth Century design Byzantine church with the pastor\, Father Thomas Alatzakis. \nCome for the Greek food including Lamb\, Souvlakia\, Athenian chicken\, Gyros\, Spanakopita\, and more!  There will also be delicious Greek pastries\, Greek music and dancing! \nSpecial musical act for Friday night will be the 80’s cover band\, The Breakfast Club\, which will be appearing from 6 pm to 9 pm. \nSt. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church is located at 1400 North O’Plaine Road\, Libertyville\, IL (between Rt.120 & Rt.137).  There is no admission to the event and FREE parking will be available on-site. \nDrive-thru service will be available each day from 4 PM until 7 PM.   \nCall 224-513-5530 for more details.
