SUMMARY:University of Illinois High School Translation Competition 2022-23 - application deadline
DESCRIPTION:Are you a high school student who studies modern Greek and/or is a heritage speaker of Greek? If so\, consider participating in the 2022-23 Illinois High School Translation Competition\, organized by the European Union Center at the University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign! Participants will translate an intermediate to advanced-level text in one of the six languages featured in the competition (Greek\, Hebrew\, Italian\, Polish\, Swedish\, and Ukrainian) into English. The texts\, which range from literature to news articles\, have been chosen by University of Illinois faculty and graduate students. This competition aims to promote the study of Less Commonly Taught Languages and to provide high school students with an opportunity to get hands-on experience in translation. \nAll students who are enrolled in high school in Illinois during the 2022-23 school year are eligible to participate. Home-schooled students who reside in Illinois are also eligible to participate. The competition will be judged by university faculty and instructors who have native or near-native knowledge of the target languages and who have experience with translation. One winning entry will be chosen for each of the six target languages\, along with 1-2 honorable mentions at the discretion of the judges. Dr. Perry Hamalis is the Cecelia Schneller Mueller Professor of Religion at North Central College (Naperville\, IL ). He earned a B.A. in Philosophy from Boston College\, an M.Div. from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology (valedictorian)\, and a Ph.D. in Religious Ethics from the University of Chicago.
