SUMMARY:University of Illinois High School Translation Competition 23 - application deadline
DESCRIPTION:Are you a high school student who studies Greek and/or is a heritage speaker of Greek? If so\, consider participating in the third annual Illinois High School Translation Competition\, organized by the European Union Center at the University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign! Participants in the Greek-English division will translate a 565-word contemporary literary text from Greek into English. This competition aims to promote the study of Less Commonly Taught Languages and to provide high school students with an opportunity to get hands-on experience in translation. \n All students who are enrolled in a high school in the state of Illinois are eligible to participate. Home-schooled students who reside in Illinois are also eligible to participate. The competition will be judged by university faculty and instructors who have native knowledge of the target languages and who have experience with translation. For each language division there will be one winner and up to two honorable mentions\, up to the discretion of the judges. Winners and honorable mentions will receive a prize and a certificate\, and they will be recognized at an award ceremony in Chicago in December 2023. DESCRIPTION:St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Elmhurst is proud to partner with the American Red Cross and be a part of all they do for our community\, our country and around the world. Our blood drive is important to patients in need\, but the collection and distribution of blood is just a small part of all the Red Cross does. The enormity of what the Red Cross accomplishes every day is astounding and this is one of the reasons we chose them as one of our core community outreach partners. \nEvery hour of the day\, more than 1\,200 people in America are assisted by the American Red Cross. More than 17\,000 people every day receive lifesaving Red Cross health and safety training. Every day\, the Red Cross provides more than 1\,100 services to military members\, their families and veterans. About 170 times a day\, Red Cross workers help families affected by a home fire or other disaster. \nFrom a blood supply standpoint: The Red Cross – needs to collect more than 13\,000 blood donations and more than 2\,500 platelet donations each day. The blood collected by the Red Cross helps millions of patients in over -2\,500 hospitals and other facilities across the country. 84 percent of blood donations are given at blood drives – hosted by generous sponsoring organizations like ours. \nAt St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Elmhurst\, we are proud to hold this blood drive in partnership with the Red Cross\, giving us all an opportunity to make a difference. \nOur first blood drive was so successful that were asked to do it again.
