Greek Orthodox Athletic League (GOAL)
The GOAL of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago is a home for athletics that traces its roots back over 50 years. Its focus is growing the principles of healthy competition, sportsmanship, and fellowship through its offerings for our youth and young adults. The GOAL’s offerings include: (1) the GOAL Basketball League for 3rd-12th Graders, along with its Men’s League; and (2) the Metropolitan Iakovos Memorial Thanksgiving Tournament.
The leadership of the GOAL includes its Commissioner and Executive Board of volunteers.
Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago-Western Region Family Basketball Tournament
The Western Region Family Basketball Tournament has been bringing together families from throughout Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and northwestern Illinois (Quad Cities) since 1952. The Mission of the Tournament is to bring together the parishes of the Western and Northern Regions of the Metropolis of Chicago in order to build up the church of Christ by confirming our unity and common faith. This is accomplished through worship, workshops, fellowship, and games.
Participating Parishes: Because of the somewhat isolated nature of the Western and Northern Region parishes outside the center of our Chicago Metropolis, we encourage all Metropolis parishes of Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Quad Cities to participate.
The Tournament is administered by a Tournament Committee as well as by the host Parish Committee and takes place in the second weekend of February. It is a traveling tournament that is hosted in rotation by the participating communities.
