We can say that true repentance is to recognize our sinful state and to seek out God. These two elements – repentance and seeking God – must go hand in hand. For the recognition and acceptance of our weaknesses, when not coupled with seeking God, can lead a person to disappointment and despair. Everything that we do during this period – fasting, attending services, almsgiving, prayer, confession, etc. – we do as a means to seek God.

In a world of manifold confusion, the ascetic experience of Orthodoxy constitutes an invaluable spiritual asset, an inexhaustible source of divine knowledge and human wisdom. The blessed phenomenon of ascesis, whose spirit pervades our entire way of life – for “asceticism is Christianity in its entirety” – is not the privilege of the few or chosen, but an “ecclesial event,” a communal good, a shared blessing and the common vocation for all faithful without exception.

The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago today applauded the issuance of a pair of resolutions by the Minnesota legislature (H.R. No. 4 and Senate No. 178) calling on the Turkish government to restore religious and human rights to the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople and other religious minorities.
