His Grace Bishop Demetrios of Mokissos, Chancellor of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago, was invited to participate in the 27th annual interfaith breakfast honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. He was accompanied by hundreds of elected officials, clergy and community leaders, including Mayor Rahm Emanuel and U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin. The participation of His Grace marks a “coming home” to the event which honors the slain civil rights leader, following last year’s breakfast where many religious leaders, including those representing the Greek Orthodox Church, were not invited. As is well known, the Greek Orthodox Church, most significantly in the person of the late Archbishop Iakovos of North and South America who marched side by side with Dr. King in Selma, Alabama, has long been a strong supporter the Civil Rights Movement, and continues to support all efforts to set at liberty the oppressed wherever they struggle for freedom and dignity.
