The Annual Metropolis Quilt-a-thon on the south side of Chicago took place on Saturday, April 6, at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Palos Hills, Illinois. It has been named and dedicated as “Maria Pazoles Memorial Quilt-a-thon” by His Grace Bishop Demetrios two years ago, in recognizing Maria’s indelible efforts and contributions to this most heart warming and worthwhile project. The project has been supported in part from our Metropolis and mostly from donations and sponsors of the quilts. Although it is a year long project implemented by the diligent efforts of the Quilt-a-thon Committee, many of the quilts are finished on Quilt-a-thon day by Philoptochos Ladies from the surrounding parishes. A Lenten Lunch is made and served by the St. Helen Philoptochos Ladies. We were blessed this year with the presence of His Grace Bishop Demetrios who visited all the deferent stations to observe the making of the quilts and talk to the ladies. This year, about three hundred quilts were made, one hundred fleeces and one hundred neck roll pillows. The quilts are distributed to various Hospitals and Institutions such as, Children’s Memorial, Comers, La Rabida, Hope, Crisis Center, Philoxenia House and more, to be given to children with life threatening diseases and to seriously ill children.
