The Metropolis of Chicago receives clean opinion from independent auditor for calendar years 2020 and 2019

LOMBARD, IL, July 12, 2021 – The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago today announced it received an unqualified (clean) audit opinion of its 2020 and 2019 financial statements from the independent accounting firm of MichaelSilver & Company, LLC.

The most recent audit is the third audit conducted by the Metropolis since the enthronement of His Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael as the Metropolitan of Chicago in March 2018.

The Metropolitan first ordered an independent audit in 2018 for the years 2015-2017, upon discovering the Metropolis’ governance and finances in disarray. The audit for the years 2015-2017 resulted in the auditors issuing a Disclaimer of Opinion, meaning that MichaelSilver was unable to form an opinion due to the limited information available to substantiate the amounts presented in the financial statements for those years.

At the conclusion of the audit of the 2015-2017 records, the Metropolis implemented a number of necessary internal controls that have helped improve its financial position and governance. Consequently, greater accountability and transparency have become part of the culture of the Metropolis, helping it quickly rebound and reestablish a trusting relationship with the faithful.

“I am most pleased with the outcome of our recent independent audit and am deeply grateful to our volunteers and staff. Through their tireless efforts, the Metropolis of Chicago is able to more effectively fulfill its sacred mission. Operational excellence at the Metropolis hinges upon the meticulous work performed by our people. Although they labor quietly behind the scenes, often unnoticed by most, they are contributing in a most profound way to our shared efforts to build a more vibrant, dynamic and relevant Church for future generations,” said His Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael.
