Chicago Metropolis announces relaunch and registration of Junior Olympics as it celebrates 40 years
LOMBARD, IL, April 16, 2021 – The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago announced today the dates and registration information for its annual Junior Olympics, which will take place in person after last year’s cancellation caused by COVID-19.
The Metropolis Junior Olympics, the proverbial marker of summer for our ministries, will celebrate its 40th year
Memorial Day Weekend (May 29-30) at SS. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Palos Hills, Illinois. After consulting with the Metropolis’ medical advisors and following best practices provided by the Center for Disease Control, the Illinois Department of Public Health, and the various States where our participants reside, the Junior Olympics will be safely conducted with appropriate physical distancing and PPE in a condensed format. The Metropolis is working closely with its medical and legal advisors, as well as the leaders at SS. Constantine and Helen, to provide the safest event possible.
The 2021 Junior Olympics will be limited this year due to facility constraints. Our gracious annual host, Stagg High School, is booked with its own school activities that had been postponed due to COVID-19. We are grateful for Stagg’s past hospitality and look forward to returning the Junior Olympics to that venue in the future. This year, our event will feature team games only, including: 7-9 Soccer, 7-10 Basketball, 11-13 Basketball, 13-18 Girls Volleyball, 13-18 Boys Volleyball, and 13-18 Coed Softball. There will be no individual activities this year.
Parish leaders, participants, and parents can find more information on everything Junior Olympics at chicago.goarch.org/junior-olympics. Parishes are required to submit their registration by Friday, April 23. Participants can sign up with their parish representative now through Friday, May 14. Questions may be submitted to: y2am@chicago.goarch.org.
