GREEK ORTHODOX REGIONAL HIERARCH VISITS SPRINGFIELD
TO MARK 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF PARISH, BISHOP DEMETRIOS OF MOKISSOS VISITS LOCAL GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH AND OFFICIATES SUNDAY SERVICES

SPRINGFIELD, IL: Bishop Demetrios of Mokissos, Chancellor of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago, visited St Anthony Greek Orthodox Church in Springfield on Sunday, May 28. Bishop Demetrios presided at Sunday services, visited afterwards with the local Greek Orthodox community, and later in the evening attend a dinner/dance celebrating the parish’s 60th Anniversary in Springfield. In addition to numerous clergy and parishioners from throughout downstate Illinois, the dinner/dance was honored to have in attendance the Most Revered Bishop Thomas John Paprocki of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield.

Bishop Demetrios of Mokissos serves as the Chancellor of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago, under the leadership of Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago. In his position, he travels throughout the Metropolis of Chicago to visit most of the parishes annually. He has received nationwide recognition for his human rights activities and interfaith outreach, including his leadership in ending the death penalty in Illinois, state resolutions calling for Religious Freedom for the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, and just last year for the official recognition by the United States of the Genocide by ISIS against the Christian minority population of Syria and Iraq.
