Back to Servant Leadership Award Recipients

Mary Harker was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and has been a vital member of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church. At the early age of 11, she joined the choir. After high school, Mary studied music in New York. She graduated from the University of Iowa and taught for 29 years at Jefferson High School before retiring. For many years, Mary taught Greek school and Sunday school to educate our youth. She has inspired others by serving on many committees, including the Parish Council, GOYA, Philoptochos, and Daughters of Penelope. Mary’s pivotal role has been as a lead chanter in our church for over six decades. She has taught many choir classes over the years and encompassed both the beautiful Greek and English versions to old and new parishioners. Her beautiful voice is engraved in every aspect of our church and a treasure to the entire parish.
